Just in time for the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota’s racing partner Gazoo unveils a superb upgrade package for the Toyota GT86/Scion FR-S. Called the GRMN Sports FR Concept Platinum, it’s a thoroughly upgraded version of the Japanese sports car with a full body kit, uprated chassis and suspension, and a tuned engine.
Gazoo has basically facelifted the 86 came up with its own design for it. The car gets a whole new front fascia with a sport bumper featuring a large splitter and air intakes. This, and the new rear-end design with those LED lights and fixed rear wing, kinda remind us of older Japanese sports cars, namely the TRD Supra. New side sills and wings, four large tailpipes, and 18-inch wheels are among other exterior modifications.
The car also benefits from upgraded braking system and lowered suspension; changes that were necessary because of what Gazoo as done to the engine. The standard 86, as you know, has a 2.0 liter boxer engine that develops only 200 hp. Some people say it needs a turbocharger to give it a bit more go-juice, while others believe a turbo would make the engine laggy, and name supercharger as a more suitable solution.
Gazoo obviously couldn’t decide, so they went for both. The engine in this car gets both a turbo and a supercharger. The supercharger gets things going and then the turbo kicks in and take over. Total output of this system is 330 horsepower and about 430 Nm of torque. Not exactly mind-blowing, but much better than the standard.
The running gear consists of the 86’s standard six-speed manual, and a mechanical limited-slip differential.
Other changes include a sport exhaust system, leather bucket seats, sport steering wheel and shift knob, roll cage, and additional boost gauge, water temperature gauge, and oil temperature gauge.
