Die-hard fans of muscle cars and drag racing will rejoice at this year’s New York Auto Show, as Shelby American is going a new 1000 horsepower version of its Shelby GT500-based Mustang. It actually makes 1,200hp at the flywheel, but only about 1,020 of those make it to the wheel. That is still a lot.

It is so much in fact that the 1000 S/C model is no longer street legal. The treatment turns this car into a toy that can only be used at the drag strips. Rest assured, it is going smoke anything else out there.

The 2013 S/C uses the same 5.8 liter V8 engine as the latest GT500, fitted with a 4.0 liter supercharger. It also gets new and high performance intake system, injectors, rods, and pistons. The only modification to the drivetrain in order to cope with 1,200hp is an uprated six-speed manual. The rest of it is so competent, they left them unchanged.

The 1000 S/C Mustang will be produced in strictly limited number, and will sport a whopping price tag of nearly $210K. In comparison, a standard 662hp GT500 costs $60K. They are also planning to make a 1000+ hp street-legal version.
