Porsche was one of the first sports car makers to begin working on  super hybrid powertrain. But by the time they came up with something presentable in form of the 918, the competition had already introduced faster, more powerful, and more interesting rivals for it. So to make up for all that effort they are going to make the most of this platform.

Porsche 918 is apparently going to be the base for a couple of new models, chief among which a four-door super sedan tipped as Porsche 984. It will be powered by the same system as the 918, but the hybrid bits may be ditched, and the V8 engine reinforced. The 984 is going to be a limited edition model, so Porsche is letting its engineers go mad with it.

In fact, they have already made a concept version, according to a report by Automobile Magazine. They have heard it first-hand from Porsche chief engineer Michael Mauer that there is indeed a full-size concept, and that “it is simply too beautiful to spend the rest of its life hidden under wraps.”

That said, Porsche top brass is not going to greenlight this project for its projected launch in 2017 unless they get some of the money they invested in the 918 back. That shouldn’t be a problem, of course, as Porsche will always get their way, even if the competition is stronger in more ways than one.
