Jay Leno is almost certainly McLaren’s most significant customer in the world. The man’s celebrity status aside, he has got every production McLaren. Which isn’t saying much, because so far they’ve only made two: the F1 and the 12C. So they flew him once again to Woking and then Dunsfold (Top Gear test track), where he got to sample the new model, the McLaren P1.
Even before Jay Leno drives McLaren P1, he’s placed an order for one. That’s remarkable, not least because of the fact that the car costs well over a $1 million USD. That’s how much Jay trusts McLaren.
The video below shows parts of Jay’s P1 drive, accompanied by McLaren test driver Chris Goodwin, whose resume includes a part that says ‘Stig’.
You can read Jay’s full review of McLaren P1 in the Sunday (September 1st) issue of Times Driving Edition. It is available via Sunday Times iPad app anywhere in the world. In a nutshell, Leno emerged from his P1 experience impressed with the car’s capabilities as a supercar, and the fact that its electric mode will enable it to comply with all the emission regulations, making it future proof.
Jay’s P1 will be delivered to him in Los Angeles early next year. He is going to give his McLaren 12C to his wife and use this as a daily driver!
