Acura announced the official NHTSA safety ratings for the 2014 MDX and RDX, and they are chuffed that they both got the full five stars awarded to the cars that pass the New Car Assessment Program’s frontal and side impact crash tests. The Acura brothers scored 4-Stars for rollover resistance test which is acceptable.

Besides the usual array of active and passive safety features available for the 2014 Acura MDX and RDX, which we get to in a minute, the cars benefit from some clever design and structural features that lay a major role in their superb performance in the crash tests. They come with ultra-high strength steel, one-piece front door stiffener ring, Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist System.

And as for the more conventional safety systems protecting the occupants from getting hurt, the MDX and RDX feature Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Pre-tensioning driver and front passenger seatbelts, Driver’s knee airbag and three-row side-curtain airbags, LATCH child seat anchors in all second row seating positions, Multi-View Rear CameraExpanded View Driver’s Mirror.

With such rating in NHTSA test, Acura expects the MDX to achieve a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award form IIHS, while the RDX can only hope for a TOP SAFETY PICK.
