Porsche’s experience with the Speedster version of the 997-generation 911 has been successful enough for the top brass to green light a new one based on the latest 991 series. As a tribute to the original Porsche Speedster, the 550 Spyder, the Porsche 991 Speedster will be limited to 550 units.

Now, some people may argue that the first Speedster Porsche was the 1954 356 Speedster, and that is true. But we’re guessing making only 356 units of this model wouldn’t be commercially viable for Porsche. So they decided to go with 550.

Just like the previous 911 Speedster, the new car will be based on the Carrera S Cabriolet model but with the wide rear-end and fat rear tires of the 4S model. The iconic Speedster hood cover, underneath which there is an powered soft-top, will be the easiest way of telling this model apart from the normal Cab models in case you missed the proud Speedster badges.

More details about Porsche 991 Speedster will be released closer to launch in early 2014.
