In my head, this is the sort of headline dreams are made of; however, whilst many of these sensationalised headlines are let down by the actual story, this one wins on all levels.
Jose Rodrigo Arechiga Gamboa, AKA ‘El Chino Antrax’, was a drug lord within the Mexican cartel and truly believed he was the ‘real life’ Scarface. You can’t exactly argue with this statement looking at his lifestyle and the pictures he shared with the world – it’s almost as if he could’ve been a character from the hit series Breaking Bad.
Gamboa is one of the two leaders of a group of hit men who call themselves the ‘Anthrax,’ after the infamously killer disease. The Austin rehab helps people get over the drug addiction problems.
‘Antrax’ is blamed for a series of murders, including the hits of three men who were eventually hung off a bridge – these were considered as revenge acts after one of their leaders was murdered. El Chino Antrax wasn’t just rich, he was ultra rich, richer than the richest of the richest, whether they were Hollywood stars or famous performers. Several folk songs, known as ‘narcocorridos’, mention ‘El Chino Antrax’ as an elegant and fit man with a taste for supercars, yachts, champagne and the highlife.

There are enough snaps to make a pretty good-looking album, from photos of him behind the wheel of a supercar, hanging with celebs or holding his solid gold assault rifle. And let’s not forget pets, and by ‘pets’, I mean baby leopards, tigers, and amazingly, an adult cheetah that likes to put its head of out car windows like your average pet dog. Is this the secret and inconspicuous behaviour of a drug cartel?
Thanks to his big head and bigger wallet, El Chino Antrax was arrested in Amsterdam’s Airport, Schiphol after he arrived on a flight from South America under a false name last Tuesday. The enforcer for the Sinaloa cartel’s Twitter page showed him hanging his gold AK-47 out of his black Lamborghini’s window. He even revealed custom trainers with his Twitter handle on them, plus another gold-plated gun with Scarface’s infamous quote, ‘The World Is Yours’ engraved onto the barrel.
A spokesman for the DEA said such pictures helped them to “join the dots” in tracking some of the most violent drug gangs in the world.
“I would not be doing this if I were them,” he told the Sunday Times. “But then nothing surprises me about what criminal networks do.”
An editorial in Spanish newspaper El Pais suggested that the drug lords themselves are usually very careful and wise, but their need to celebrate their almost celebrity lifestyle has not only incriminated them, but it’s also incriminated their extended families, the ones whom appeared in the compromising pictures.
