McLaren F1 keeps going up in value, especially the ones that are unique is some way or other and have a significant background. This red McLaren F1 you see here has both, and as a result it’s been sold recently for a staggering $10 Million (£6.2 million) to a British buyer.

This chassis number 28 McLaren F1 was built as a gift for the company’s Formula One team driver Michael Andretti. It is one of the only 64 road-going F1s, and one of the only two red examples. So it is pretty rare. What’s more, the car has Andretti’s signature on the sun visor, which adds to its exclusivity.

The car was sold by Andretti to a Japanese collector and made another trip back to the U.S. before ending up where it came from, in the UK. $10 million might sounds like a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a 20-year old car, but McLaren F1 is proving to be one of the soundest investments ever. Last year a silver F1 was sold for $8.4 million. This year it’s 10. Next year it’ll be 12.

Besides rarity, McLaren is also a highly coveted collector’s car due to its technical significance. Boasting a 670 horsepower BMW V12 engine, the F1 was for a long while the fastest car in the world (240 mph – 386 km/h). It also has a glorious motorsport history.
