As an homage to the classic 1968 movie Bullitt starring Steve McQueen, and also to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, Silverstone Classic organizers decided to recreate what is possibly the most famous movie scene in history involving a car, the Bullitt chase scene.
The got the same cars, a Highland Green Ford Mustang GT Fastback and a black Dodge Charger R/T, but the venue, Silverstone Grand Prix track, is literally a world apart from the streets of San Francisco where the original chase was recorded. Also, the drivers are not exactly movie star quality, but hey, it is still a very honorable effort.
Both Bullitt chase scene cars will be on show at the Silverstone Classic as part of a huge Mustang presence at the event. What’s more, a number of other Mustangs from movies such as Gone in 60 Seconds and American Gangster will be there, as well as TV presenter Mike Brewer with his recently restored 1967 Mustang Fastback.
“It’s hard to imagine a better way for us to celebrate the Mustang’s forthcoming 50th birthday party than by making this special homage to the classic car chase in Bullitt,” said Nick Wigley, Silverstone Classic Event Director. “As you can imagine, we had a lot of fun making this film – not least as it gave us all a great excuse to watch the original movie once again!”
