Ford’s quest for developing sustainable technology solutions continues with the introduction of new lightweight concepts that show how you can improve performance and fuel efficiency simply by being clever. Using these solutions they’ve built an F-150 truck that is 700 lbs (317 kg) lighter than the normal model, and this, the Ford Fusion Lightweight.
The Fusion Lightweight is more interesting because while it remains a perfectly functioning family sedan with all the amenities in it intact, it weighs as much as a Ford Fiesta, which is a tiny hatchback. That is a reduction of up to 25 percent over the standard.
The key behind this amazing light-weighting is the use of advanced materials including new metals, alloys and composites. In creating the Ford Fusion Lightweight for example, the engineers have used materials found in today’s lightweight electronic devices, including aluminum, chemically toughened glass and advanced lightweight plastics.
Increasing the use of lightweight materials is part of Ford’s Blueprint for Sustainability, which integrates sustainability into the business plan for the long-term preservation and enhancement of environmental, social and financial capital. This will have a big effect on their production cars in the near future. Lighter weight means better performance and driving experience.
