Porsche 918 Catches Fire at Toronto Gas Station

A brand-new Porsche 918 Spyder went up in flames yesterday in Toronto at, of all places, a gas station! The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the incident brings back to mind the memory of 911 GT3 fire issue which went on to become a major problem for the German automaker.

We’re only guessing here, but the 918’s roof mounted exhaust pipes, which are literally like chimneys, and their proximity to the fuel filler may have something to do with it. After all, you only need a splash of petrol on those hot pipes to start a fire.

Another cause of the fire could be the electric motors, which as we know from the Fisker Karma and Tesla Model S and countless other EVs, are pretty fire-prone. We hope this Porsche 918 fire was just an accident and that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the car. Recalling a million Euro car would be catastrophically embarrassing for Porsche.
