A lot of people laughed, hard, when they first heard Ford is going to launch a four-cylinder version of the new Mustang. Then they heard this EcoBoost four-banger is actually more powerful than the old 3.7 liter V6 unit, and they just sort of stopped. But numbers on a piece of paper are one thing, the reality is quite another.
So to see if the 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost with its 300-something four-cylinder turbo engine is worthy enough to be called a Mustang, MT’s Carlos Lago took it for a spin and a deep technical evaluation:
2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is powered by a 2.3 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an official rating of 320 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. @ 3000 rpm. Like other variants of the new model, it can be had with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-Speed SelectShift Automatic with Paddle Shifters. The whole point of choosing the EcoBoost is fuel economy, and it doesn’t disappoint, averaging 22 city/31 highway with the manual gearbox, and 21 city/32 hwy with the automatic transmission.
