A lot of people criticized Porsche for deciding to make 918 units of the Porsche 918 Spyder hyper car. Concerns about exclusivity aside, they believed the auto maker is going to struggle to sell them all. Not so. Apparently, the 918 is selling like hot cakes, and in fact it is almost sold out.
Porsche has so far delivered about 30 918s and will produce the rest steadily over the next few years. Porsche asks for a $200,000 deposit from potential customers and puts them on the waiting list if they want to buy the car at MSRP, which is $847,975 in the U.S., which is the largest market for the Porsche 918. Of course, you can always buy one right now in the open market, but that will cost you well over a million.
As you know, both Ferrari and McLaren have limited the number of the hyper cars they will produce. McLaren will make 375 units only while LaFerrari is limited to 499 units. They are both already sold out. Porsche 918 Spyder being cheaper and more usable car than those two, the Germans decided to balance out the project financially by producing a bigger number.
But according to Andre Oosthuizen, vice president of marketing for Porsche Cars North America, this is probably “the last and the final straight,” so if you want a 918 from factory, you better hustle!
