After releasing a NASCAR version of the new Camry sedan, Toyota revealed at this year’s SEMA show a Camry “Sleeper” dragster. The idea of a sleeper is car to look as standard as possible, but pack the biggest punch as possible underneath.

They have pretty much nailed it with the Toyota Camry Dragster, as it looks almost like a car an accountant would drive to work every morning precisely at 7:30. But peel away that beige suit and you see a red tubular chassis and a 5.7-liter 3UR-FE V8 engine in the midst of it.

That engine, featuring a TRD supercharger, a wet nitrous system, and custom transmission, axles and electronics, develops a colossal 850 horsepower. The power is transferred to the ground through a set of DOT 335/30/18 drag racing tires in the hope to achieve 9.80-second quarter-mile time.

“This Camry is the ultimate sleeper — it definitely has the element of surprise on its side and more than enough muscle to drop the hammer on any unsuspecting car that pulls up,” said Wade, Motorsports Technical Center Director.
