Remember the Lotus-based electric car, Detroit Electric SP:01? We can’t blame you if you don’t. They just announced something long ago and then went into hibernation, as it were, and have only woken up, releasing a few new pictures and revealing some fresh details about the project.

As with most other electric car start-ups, Detroit Electric SP:01 is built upon the chassis and running gear of Lotus Exige. The carbon fiber body is bespoke, but even so, you can easily see a lot of Lotus in it. That makes you wonder, if all DE has to do is install an electric motor and some batteries, what’s taking them so long? The SP:01 is now slated for production in 2016.

Not to be hater, but it seems that by the time Detroit Electric SP:01 is ready for sale, it’s gone out of date for months. The EV industry has an excruciatingly fast pace. You can’t dilly dally around like this and hope for the best.

Still, Detroit Electric SP:01 has some redeeming features, considering the lack of variety and options in this segment. You can have the electric sports car in a wide range of vibrant colors, including unique shades of white, silver, orange, red, green and blue, and it features a complimentary 8.4-inch Android tablet that doubles as the center console main screen.

Performance-wise, the SP:01 packs a 285 PS electric motor which gives a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds. The real world range is yet to be confirmed.
