Announcing the official debut of the new 2016 Audi R8 super car at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, the German company also confirmed the long-running rumors that the car will have Laser Headlights. You can’t shoot this laser at other road users, but it does give good light, so you can avoid them.
The teaser picture released on the occasion revealing a tiny part of the 2016 Audi R8 also leads up to the conclusion that these leaked pictures we featured a while ago as the real deal were in fact not the real deal, but a couple of fugazies. They were just renderings. Pretty good ones, but renderings nonetheless.
This also means the 2016 Audi R8 is going to look more like the existing model than we were hoping. Audi seems to be inspired by Porsche in updating the design of their cars, meaning they often settle for the least number of changes, and among them they pick the easiest to implement.
Laser headlights will be an optional extra on the next Audi R8, and a bit of a gimmick to be honest. The standard lights on that car are going to be LED units boasting 37 diodes in each unit. That’ll be shiny enough to deliver more than adequate illumination of the road. But if you get the laser headlights you will be able to say I’ve got laser lights. And that’s really cool.
