McLaren P1 Laps Top Gear Test Track in E-Mode

What you are about to see is absolutely awesome, but also somewhat creepy. Here’s a McLaren P1 going around the Top Gear test track at Dunsfold in electric mode. The creepy part is that this almost silent lap is said to be significantly quicker than what all those loud, gas-powered machines on the Power Lap board have managed!

This is not an official Top Gear run, mind you, and the one minute twelve seconds lap time is not confirmed. But you don’t need a number to realize how quick the McLaren P1 is even in E-Mode. According to the man onboard whose GoPro captured this footage, it felt like time warp.

McLaren P1, as you know, uses an electric motor in place of the traditional starter. The main duty of the E-motor is to start up the twin-turbo V8 engine and supplement its power in times of need. But as a byproduct, it also enables the car to run solely on electricity for about 12 miles.Together the E-Motor and the 3.8 liter V8 petrol engine make 916 horsepower, enough to take the rear-wheel-drive P1 from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and onto a limited top speed of 350 km/h.
