Pound for pound, the new Mercedes AMG GT S is the most direct rival you can find out there for the king of all posh sports cars, the Porsche 911 Turbo. But the GT is the first proper, real sports car AMG has made, while Porsche has been doing this for over half a century. So can the AMG GT really hold its own against the master on the race track?
That is what the guys from EVO magazine set out to find by taking both cars to the beautiful Anglesey circuit. The outcome of this test does not tell the whole story though, because these are, first and foremost, street cars and their abilities should be judged as all-rounders. But track times are always good for bragging rights, so let’s see how it goes:
Mercedes AMG GT S vs Porsche 911 Turbo are both two-seater sports car with turbocharged engines and dual-clutch transmission, seriously good looks, and well-equipped, cool interiors. But while the GT is a rear-drive car, the 911 Turbo benefits from all-wheel-drive. Not that that’s a huge advantage, because unlike the GT which is a front-engined car, the Turbo has its engine in the back.
