The rumors are raging about what will happen to Top Gear and whether or not Chris Evans will be part of the team that’s being put together by the BBC for a new version of the show. Now Evans himself kind of plays into that by sending his Ferrari LaFerrari around the TG test track at Dunsfold for a crack at the fastest lap time title.

The gig was part of Evans’ new TV show, which is a new version of his old TFI Friday show. Lewis Hamilton was a guest in this episode, but unfortunately he wasn’t the one taking the LaFerrari around the track. That job was given to former Fifth Gear presenter, BTCC hot shot, and the current “Stink”, Jason Plato:

So the LaFerrari popped in a 1:14:2 lap which is a hugely respectable time, but not as quick as the current – and since the show may never return, eternal – leader of the board, Pagani Huayra which recorded 1:13:8 some years ago. This is interesting because the Huayra is older and about 360 horsepower weaker than the LaFerrari, and it comes with a lot more bells and whistles than LaFezza. And yet it is significantly quicker.

That said, there are a couple of asterisks attached to that time. First, the car was a privately-owned LaFerrari – as mentioned, most likely Evans’ own car – and so Plato was probably told to go easy on it. Second, it could be that Plato is not as good a driver as TG’s own Stig. Sorry Jason!
