When the boys at Sport Auto got hold of the 2016 Porsche 991 facelift turbo, and before they put it through their usual battery of tests, they decided to pair it up with a couple of older turbocharged Porsches. This puts in perspective the evolution of Porsche’s “Turbo” models and significance of the new Carrera getting a turbocharged engine.
In this video the 2016 Porsche 991 meets the 993 Turbo and the also mac daddy of all turbo Porsches, the legendary 959. You get to see the 991 and the 959 in action as well, which is really sweet:
Turbochargers are a fact of motoring life these days, but the good news is the modern turbos are nothing like the early versions. The lag is virtually eliminated through a number of clever technologies like variable geometry turbines and fancy software. So although the 2016 Porsche 991 features two meaty turbos on its 3.0 liter flat-six engine, the driver won’t really notice their presence. The car doesn’t even sound turbocharged. If anything, it sings the sweet melody of early air-cooled 911s which is just fantastic. And to think this is just the basic Carrera 2S model. What are the next GT3 and GT3 RS models going to be like?
