McLaren announced they are coming to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed with heavy armament, bringing not one but two multi-million pound McLaren P1 GTR track cars. One is a regular GTR from the factory with a special livery, and the other a road-going model built by Lanzante.
McLaren’s own Goodwood-bound GTR is a tribute to the great James Hunt, celebrating the 40th anniversary of his Formula 1 championship win. The livery is inspired by Hunt’s famous race helmet featuring a black base adorned with red, yellow and blue stripes. It will be driven up the Goodwood hill by McLaren P1 GTR Driver Programme Mentor, Bruno Senna.
As for the Lanzante McLaren P1 GTR, it’s an “experimental prototype” of a road-going GTR modified in a number of strategic areas so it can be legally used on the road while retaining its very much race car-like appearance and power. Lanzante used to the semi-works McLaren F1 GTR that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, but now they seem to have found a more lucrative way of hooking up with the firm.
Besides the two GTRs McLaren is also bringing to this year’s Festival of Speed models from the Sports Series, Super Series and Ultimate Series, namely the 570GT and the Sprint version of this model. As always, the firm’s iconic vintage race cars will be on display as well.
