Subaru fancy themselves as a bit of a record breaker. Every once in a while they attempt to better an established record, whether it’s going round the Isle of Man, or driving down a bobsled run, or the good ol’ Nurburgring. They are so much into this stuff, every once in a while they make a special “Record Attempt” version of a production model. The new Subaru WRX STI Type RA is the latest.
As befits a record breaker, even if it’s just in name, the Subaru WRX STI Type RA comes with more power and a more performance-minded attitude. through weight reduction, suspension and engine upgrades. If we cut to the chase, the main highlights include carbon fiber roof panel, the removal of the spare tire, a carbon fiber pedestal wing and lightweight BBS 19-inch forged alloy wheels shod with 245/35R19 Yokohama Advan Sports tires.

Meanwhile the 2.5 liter turbocharged BOXER engine gets a new STI-spec cold air intake and high flow performance exhaust plus retuned ECU and stronger pistons, all for an estimated 310 horsepower output. What’s more, the six-speed transmission features a revised 3rd gear ratio paired with a short throw shifter, and you get inverted front struts and rear double wishbone suspension all with Bilstein dampers. Put this lot together and they make Subaru WRX STI Type RA one helluva performance machine.
It looks the part too, what with the Cherry Blossom Red accent around both the front mesh grille and new rear bumper cover, new and more pronounced aero components, Recaro front seats and suede accents.
