Well, they did it. This time the weather played along and Subaru finally managed to tackle the Green Hell, the fearsome 12.8-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife race track, and accomplished what they had set out to do. In this attempt Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special managed to bang in a sub-seven minute lap, going around in 6:57.5.
While most of this remarkable achievement is due to the technical excellence of Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR, which is a Time Attack machine, one must not forget the skills and prowess of racing driver Richie Stanaway who piloted the car. This wasn’t done just for fun, either. The Nurburgring lap is supposed to create some good hype draw attention to the upcoming release of the production WRX STI Type RA and showcase the capabilities of the Subaru WRX STI’s standard all-wheel drive system in general.

Built by ProDrive based on the 2017 WRX STI model, Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special comes with a modified 2.0-liter Subaru WRC-spec boxer motor and Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. It packs 600 horsepower and while they haven’t tested how fast it is flat out, at the ‘Ring the car hit 179 mph. Other highlights include WRC gearbox with an automatic clutch, modified with hydraulics for paddle-shift operation, special aero kit with DRS wing, and lightweight BBS 19-in. forged alloy wheels shod with 245/35R19 Yokohama Advan Sports tires.
