Toyota-Subaru FT-86 Concept first pictures

Toyota finally revealed their new sport coupe which has been developed in a joint project with Subaru. The car had been confirmed some years ago, but only now it’s ready to be shown as a concept at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show from October 24 to November 4. It’s called the FT-86 or “hachi roku” in Japanese and it’s a RWD vehicle.
Now you are thinking, it’s a Toyota and it’s a concept so it gotta be a hybrid or something! But no! Under the bonnet of FT-86 is where Subaru comes to the game with its 2.0 liter flat-four naturally-aspirated gasoline engine. It is also equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission and ADVICS brakes, whatever that is!
Toyota is actually very good at making compact sports cars, remember the Celica or MR2, and this car too looks very promising. And it is very compact as well, it is 4,160mm long, 1,760mm wide, and 1,260mm high with a wheelbase of 2,570mm. The only criticism here should be the Subaru part, the engine, which seems a bit underpowered for a sporty coupe.

HAHAHA, UNDERPOWERED??? Subaru’s 2.0 turbo runs 225 hp in the US versions and the Japanese spec STi which ran a 2.0 pumped out 300 hp!! If by some miracle it gets the 2.5 liter instead and is sub 3500 lbs (which it will be by looking at it) this thing will be a rocket ship!

Theres no way this will ever make reasonable power. Subaru motors have been lacking in that department for years.

Yes it is underpowered – in Toyota ad material it states that it will have 200hp, right on the front page of the website. The fact that there are hot rodded versions out there that have more power is irrelevant. But if you think 225hp is adequate, then you obviously have some odd ideas about the nature of a sports car.
