Thanks to some leaked documents from the European Trademark Office we now have a rough idea what the next Mazda3 looks like. These official design sketches prove that those pictures of the car we’d seen before were for real.

Now the car may look a bit weird in these sketches, but the in reality it is actually a thing of beauty. The new Mazda3 adapts the firm’s Kodo design language, seen on the CX-5 and the new Mazda6. It lets go of the current generation’s smiley face, but replaces the small with an enormous front grille. The headlights are another highlight of this new design philosophy.

2014 Mazda3 also gets a whole host of SKYACTIV technology features, including a range of fuel efficient engines, sophisticated chassis and suspension, and a high-tech body shell. That is all very good, but what we want to know is if the next generation retains that peppy handling of the current Mazda3.

The new Mazda3 won’t debut until late 2013.
