Mazda CX-3 Small Crossover In the Works

Mazda too is joining almost all the other car makers who are working on new small crossover models to take on the Nissan Juke. Mazda’s contender for this segment is called the CX-3, and it’ll be based on the next generation Mazda2 supermini.

The styling of this car is, rather interestingly, described by sources close to Mazda as chunky! That’s what you expect from a utility version of the Mazda2. As with every new Mazda, the CX-3 will be packed with SKYACTIV technologies, and gets a range of diesel and petrol engines, but nothing above 2.0 liter.

The car will be like a downsized version of the current CX-5 in every aspect, even the drivetrain. Seeing as nobody buys a small crossover to do serious off roading, Mazda may offer the CX-3 as a front-wheel-drive model only. After all, it is supposed to be a very efficient car, and not having four-wheel-drive will help a lot with that.

The CX-3 is due in 2014, when it will join a range of new Mazda model. We have the new Mazda3 coming up, and also the next generation MX-5. The Japanese car maker is reportedly working on a rival for VW up! as well, which should be interesting.
