McLaren finally revealed the official details of the P1’s powertrain, and like everything else in this hyper car, it is over-engineered and very sophisticated. The P1 boasts a hybrid system, consisting of a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol engine and a low-weight, highly efficient electric motor.

The V8 engine is basically the same unit used in the 12C, but it is heavily revised for the P1. The petrol engine alone makes 737PS (727 bhp) at 7,500rpm, and 720Nm of torque from 4,000rpm. Combine that with the 179PS and 260 Nm of the electric motor, and you arrive at a total output of 916PS (903 bhp) and 900Nm, with emissions of less than 200g/km.

That CO2 number is pretty amazing, considering the fact that it’s a super fast hyper car we’re talking about here. It even offers 10km of zero-emission electric drive in E-Mode.

The P1 also gets Formula 1-derived technologies including DRS and IPAS. DRS is a drag reduction system and has to do with active aerodynamics. The IPAS (Instant Power Assist System) is more interesting, as it utilizes the electric motor to give counteract the turbo lag and give the car the same immediacy and sharp response of a naturally-aspirated engine.

McLaren has not revealed the P1’s performance numbers yet. For that we have to wait for the car’s world debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
