Rolls-Royce’s future plans, according to British magazine Car, include making a SUV to rival Bentley’s upcoming utility vehicle, and a new super roadster powered by a massive V16 engine. RR wanted to do a V16 car for a long time. Looks like this time they are serious about it.

In fact, the Phantom was first conceived as a V16 car, before BMW’s brass decided to ditch it for a V12 because it made more sense. In his latest Johnny English film, Rowan Atkinson borrowed one of the V16 prototype engines from Rolls-Royce and put it in Phantom Coupe. It fit perfectly. The new supercar will probably be something like that, only a drop-top.

Roller’s new V16 will be good for at least 700 horsepower, but that power is not going to be used to achieve a frighteningly high top speed. It will be used to create an incredibly refined and luxurious road yacht with an aluminum space frame, a soft top, and only two seats. It will be used for effortless performance.

The new Rolls-Royce supercar is slated for 2016. In a few weeks though, they will be unveiling the new Wraith coupe.
