Owning a Shelby Cobra is a distant dream for the majority of the grown ups. But thanks to a joint effort by Carroll Shelby Licensing and National Products Limited, their kids can enjoy the thrill of driving an open-top American thoroughbred, at least in toy car form.

They have just revealed the officially licensed Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster, featuring the exact details of the real car, including chrome wheels, side exhaust pipes, rear fender gas cap, famous roll bar and official badging. They come in red or blue, complete with the iconic Cobra racing white stripes.

Power comes from a small 12 volt electric motor mated to a transmission with reverse, low and high gears, providing a top speed of 5 mph. The car can be used for 45 minutes on a single battery charge.

There will be a limited version of just 998 units, featuring navy blue metallic pearl finish and sport Carroll Shelby’s famous 98 racing number and functioning headlights, as well as full documents and a special serial number. No word on the pricing.

The idea behind this car was one of the earliest photos of Carroll Shelby showing him as a child in a pedal car. A Cobra prototype will be displayed in the Retro Motorsport booth at the Monterey Historic Races, will then be donated to the Carroll Shelby Foundation.
