A photographer running around Maranello, home of Ferrari, looking for something cool to shoot got lucky the other day and scooped what could be a new variant of the Ferrari LaFerrari. The picture shows a heavily camouflaged LaFerrari prototype on a test drive.

Now, those of you who follow the news with sufficient vigor and enthusiasm know that Ferrari has two ongoing projects involving the LaFerrari. One is a hard-core, hard-hitting track car called LaFerrari XX, and the other an open-top version of the road-going model.

This LaFerrari prototype is most likely a test bed for the latter, as it lacks the massive aero parts that are the signature dish of the XX. The prototype also appears to have different doors than normal LaFerraris, which is another evidence of this being the Spider model. Since the roof on the LaFerrari Spider has to come off, the butterfly doors of the normal model have to be replaced with conventional doors.

Ferrari is set to reveal the LaFerrari XX later this month in Abu Dhabi. The Spider, however, will not appear under the radar until at least 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
