New generation of Hyundai Sonata is finally showing itself in its full glory as the company unveils it in Korean domestic market. The new Sonata, apart from its name, does not share a single line with the outgoing model! It comes with a totally new design which according to Hyundai is called the ‘fluidic sculpture’ design philosophy’.
Considering the class of Sonata this new design is actually rather surprising. This new sleek and smooth shape remind us of Lexus somehow. “The Sonata will set a new standard for world class mid-size sedans with state-of-the-art technology, superior build quality and emotional design,” Euisun Chung, Hyundai’s Vice Chairman said at the launching ceremony for the car today in Seoul. “The new Sonata will raise Hyundai’s brand values.” Still, it doesn’t have the finesse of European sedans.
In Korea the new Sonata will launch with a 2-liter Theta II MPi gasoline engine developing 165 hp. It can also be had with a 2.4 liter Theta II GDI engine, which powers the entry level model for the US market. All models are now available with a new six-speed automatic transmission.
For extra rigidity and safety, most of body panels in the new car are made of steel. Also it has six airbags, Vehicle Dynamic Control including Hill-start Assist Control and Brake Assist System as standard.
The price of new 2011 Hyundai Sonata when it goes on sale in US in January 2010 will be between US$17,600 to US$21,450, depending on options. So despite all the improvements inside and out, the Sonata still has its real winning card which is affordability.
