Rumors about the drop-top version of McLaren MP4-12C suggest the British supercar will get a folding carbon fiber hardtop.

Not only that, it will also have a clever and rather complicated folding procedure. It apparently first rotate to vertical position and will then sinks behind the seats, like a sort of additional firewall.

McLaren could have given it a soft top, but the MP4’s archrival Ferrari 458 Spider features a hardtop, so…

The Spider is an opportunity for McLaren to make things right. The MP4 is a technically flawless car, but it’s a bit cold and emotion-less for a proper supercar. With the Spider McLaren should add some lunacy to it, making it more fun.

That’s what Lamborghini did with the first Gallardo Spider. The Coupe Gallardo was a bit too soft and cuddly, so with the Spider they deliberately made the car mad and exciting. The performance suffered a bit, but nobody cared!
