It was almost certain that Ferrari is going to let go of its underperforming Brazilian driver Felipe Massa at the end of this season, but in an amazing turn of events they renewed his contract for another year. Massa’s acceptable performance in the last couple of Grand Prix races in the Far East might have something to do with it. Well, that, or the fact that Ferrari couldn’t get Hamilton and Vettel.
Massa is of course a Ferrari made man, even though he’s not an Italian. He’s been associated with the brand since he was little. Felipe openly admits that he like to stay with Ferrari for as long as possible:
“I am very happy to have reached this agreement,” commented the Brazilian. “Ferrari is my racing family and throughout my entire time in Formula 1, I have always driven cars powered by engines built in Maranello: I can’t see myself driving cars propelled by anything else! First and foremost, I want to thank President Montezemolo and Stefano Domenicali, who had faith in me and who have always supported me, even at the most difficult moments. The team and also all the fans can rest assured that I will do all in my power to help the Scuderia reach the targets it sets itself each year.”
Now with the 2013 season lineup finalized with Massa and Alonso, Ferrari F1 team can spend all their energy on the remaining races of the 2012, and concentrate on making a better car for next year. It’s been a while since last won a championship.
