Subaru released the first pictures and details of the all-new Forester SUV, confirming its official debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. This sturdy off-roader will go on sale next year as a 2014 model, adding more style and convenience to the mix.

The Forester has a reputation for being incredibly tough and rugged, and with a rally-bred Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive standard for all models, it is also hugely capable. But it’s always been a bit too agricultural, bit too rough.

That is not the case with the new one. While retaining all the good stuff, Subaru has soften the edges in the new model. It has a more refined interior, a more supple ride, better on-road behavior, and tons of new high-tech features, including smartphone integration, navigation, rear view camera, and harman/kardon premium audio amplifier and speakers. So it will be much more pleasant to live with it.

Engine-wise, you get a 2.4 liter naturally-aspirated, or a 2.0 liter turbo, both four-cylinder boxers. The 2.4 liter makes 170 hp and 174 lb.-ft. of torque, while the 2.0 liter turbo is good for 250 hp and 258 lb.-ft. peak torque. Both engine can be had with a CVT gearbox, but only the 2.0 liter gets 6-speed and 8-speed manual modes and Hill Descent Control.
