Earlier this year Toyota previewed the convertible version of the GT86 sports car with the FT86 Open Concept. As expected, the production version is going to be pretty much identical to the concept car, as seen in these leaked patent images.
The electric soft top of the GT86 convertible has the same shape as the solid roof of the coupe, so in theory the aerodynamic properties of both cars should be similar. But the convertible will be considerably heavier, due to all the reinforcement the chassis needs when you take away the roof above its head.
Whether or not the GT86 Cabrio will be just as good to drive as the coupe remains to be seen. But in any case, the idea of an affordable, fun to drive, drop-top sports car sounds great. It is not clear yet if the 86’s siblings – Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S – will get the convertible version or not.
