Mazda is planning to break the world record for the largest of Mazda cars – MX-5s to be more precise – at this year’s IMAX-5 event. The existing record is 459 Mazda MX-5s, and it was set in 2012 i Essen Germany. The new event, to be held in Lelystad, the Netherlands, is hoping for 800 MX-5s.
That should be easy, seeing as in the past 24 years Mazda has sold close to 1 million MX-5s. When formed, the largest parade of the best-selling sports roadster of all time will follow a 15km route through the fascinating Dutch landscape near Lelystad to make the record official.
To attract the MX-5 owners to turn up at the event, Mazda has lined up a number of activities, including test drive of new SKYACTIV models, and technology showcases such as i-ACTIVSENSE. There is also different race simulators available for the participants, should they decided they don’t like to wander about in the MX-5 exhibition running outside.
Other activities include track demonstrations of the Ribank Mazda MaX5 Cup racers as well as Van Herck Racing’s three-rotor-engined Mazda3 20B. Watching a film at Europe’s largest drive-in cinema wraps up the IMAX-5 2013.
