Tanom Motors, the Virginia-based maker of the Invader high performance reverse trike – TR-3 roadster, TC-3 coupe and the Model “R”, announced the start of production at a new 55,000 square foot facility in Culpepper. Great. Now, what’s an Invader, you ask?
Try to remember 2012 SEMA show, and the name Tanom Invader may ring a bell. It is, according to its makers, a convergence of the Automobile and Motorcycle into one unique vehicle. The thing is designed for no other reason than having fun, but it’s not mad. It is actually rather clever.
Because the Invader is light and simple, the fuel economy is pretty good. Because of the same reason, it is also quite good fun to drive. The car has a 194 horsepower 1.4 liter engine and a six-speed gearbox, making it possible to hit 60mph in around four seconds and reach and a 144 mph top speed.
For its character and purpose, the Tanom Invader is rather sophisticated. Tanom Motor’s new facility includes a 12,000 square foot assembly line area with five major vehicle assembly areas as well as several sub-assembly areas. The 7,000 square foot body panel finishing area includes a state-of-the-art paint booth, powder-coating oven, and carbon fiber hydro dipping area. Body panels are injection molded in a 15,000 square foot area containing 31 separate molds. The 10,000 square foot parts inventory area is currently stocked with initial inventory for the production of over 150 Invaders.
Judging by the first reactions and feedback, Tanom expects the Invader to sell good, and their production numbers to be in the hundreds for 2014.
