As is the case with important new cars, the first official pictures leak onto the web before the car maker has a chance to formally introduce it, or take the wraps off it at a global motor show. The car in question this time is the 2015 Subaru WRX STI which reveals itself in leaked photos ahead of its official debut at the 2014 NAIAS in Detroit.
Judging by what we can see in these pictures, the STI recipe has remained unchanged in the new model, meaning the car get, on the outside, a large rear spoiler, a sizable rear diffuser with four tailpipes, a front splitter, a pair of chunky side skirts, a more prominent hood scoop, and some golden wheels to go with its blue paint job, paying homage the look of the original Subaru Impreza rally cars.
The more important part of the STI treatment for the Subaru WRX is the mechanical bits, including the powertrain, suspension, and brakes. The chassis in the 2015 Subaru WRX STI will undoubtedly be stiffer and sportier than in the normal WRX models, and the brakes will be beefier. As for the engine while details of it are yet to be revealed, sources say it’ll have upwards of 300 horsepower from a 2.5 liter turbocharged unit. The standard WRX has a 2.0 liter engine with 265 horsepower, so something like 330 sounds reasonable for the STI.
