To spice up their second Porsche 918 Spyder test, which includes a thorough track test of the new hyper car, MotorTrend brought along to Big Willow race track a Porsche 959. The 918 is in many ways the spiritual successor to the 959, even though officially it is a replacement for the Carrera GT.

At any rate, Porsche fans are going to melt watching this video, as it includes two of the greatest cars their favorite brand has ever produced. It also includes a 0 to 60 mph acceleration test, recording a jaw-dropping, McLaren P1-beating, 2.4 seconds.

The upshot is, Porsche 918 Spyder shows you what the next 30 years of automotive technology looks like in the same way that the 959 did back in the 80s. Stuff that were considered revolutionary on the 959 – such as torque-splitting all-wheel-drive, sequential turbos, and tire pressure monitor – are now ordinary feature. So in a couple of decade we will be getting intelligent hybrid powertrain, boost control, super clever infotainment, and 100+ mpg rating in our normal family cars.
