Toyota has apparently caught the Nurburgring fever, even though they currently do not have a production model that can hold its own on the fearsome race track. That didn’t stop them trying though. They sent the Prius plug-in hybrid to Nordschliefe to see how economically it can lap the circuit!
Guess Toyota is more interested in the ‘green’ part of the Green Hell. It took Toyota Prius, fitted with TRD goodies, an agonizing 20 minutes and 59 seconds to complete a lap, but it managed to record a mind-boggling 698mpg.
That figure equals five tablespoons of fuel for the entire lap, and if you are wondering how is that even possible, the answer is the Prius ran for most of the lap on electricity alone. The real world fuel economy record of this car is 134 mpg, which is still pretty astonishing.
Toyota Prius plug-in Hybrid is powered by a 1.8-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine with a compact, rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
