The new BMW i8 hybrid is pitched by the manufacturer as a proper sports car. The specs and performance numbers also suggest the car can play ball with the best of this class. The only way we can find out if that’s true is by pitting it against the very best of this class: Porsche 911.
So here’s a no-nonsense BMW i8 vs Porsche 911 straight line performance test courtesy of the good folks at Evo. Can the hybrid sports car of the future beat the old-fashioned gas-guzzling sports car of today?
And there’s your answer: no way, Jose! The i8 might be good for a hybrid, but it is by no means a full-blooded sports car. That doesn’t mean what BMW achieved here is anything less than spectacular. I mean, the car has a three-cylinder engine and an electric motor, and yet it manages to stay with the mighty flat-six-powered Porsche half way to the finish line. Impressive.
