So after what felt like ages, we finally get to know the true specs of the European version of the 2016 Mazda MX-5. Mazda is finally letting the press behind the wheel of their most important car ever. So let’s see if the new Miata can live up to the expectations.
The first video review of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 is from the good folks at Autocar. They drive a pre-production base model:
As for the specs, this base 2016 Mazda MX-5 is powered by a 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-G petrol engine with 130bhp mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. That is just enough power to enable the car to get out of its own way. There will also be a 2.0 liter version with 155bhp which would be a lot more interesting.
The new MX-5 is lighter and more agile than its predecessor, which is really saying something, so that’s probably why Mazda decided not to bother with a huge amount of power. This way they can keep the costs low as well.
In terms of looks the new MX-5 feature a more serious expression on its face than the old model, and all in all looks sportier and more, well, macho. It is too soon to talk about the quality of fit and finish, as final production models are still six months away.
