A large part of why people buy the Mazda MX-5 is because it’s an open-top sports car. But some people have this fantasy where their favorite sports car has a big hatch at the back and can haul stuff around. This Mazda MX-5 Hatchback is the embodiment of that fantasy.
Of course, the designer has taken liberties with the Mazda MX-5 Hatchback and has it tuned as well. The car features chin spoiler and fender flares and side skirts, and it’s obviously slammed on a set of oversized wheels. So yes, it does push the limits of imagination a bit. But still, it’s an interesting thing to look at.
The idea of a rear-whee-drive hot hatchback is an intriguing one. Granted, even if you really do turn the current MX-5 into a hatchback it still won’t be particularly hot. But the inherent driving fun should carry over to the Mazda MX-5 Hatchback without any major hiccups. Of course, this car is more of a coupe than a hatchback, which is better, since that means it’s a direct rival now for the Toyota GT86.
