Just out of the blue Chevrolet dropped the first pictures and details of the new and thoroughly improved 2017 Camaro ZL1. It comes as a surprise because the ZL1 is a significant enough car to warrant just a little bit more hoopla. But hey, maybe they’re playing it cool.

The 2017 Camaro ZL1 comes with a set of very bold numbers which begin with a supercharged 6.2 liter V-8 engine. Granted, such a big, forced, thirsty engine is not in tune with the times. But who cares, when it makes 640 horsepower. The V8 comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission (optional), which is another big number, if you don’t like the standard six-speed manual with active rev matching.

The new ZL1 is undoubtedly as muscular as Phil Heath during Mr. Olympia season, but we one can argue the Camaro is smarter than that man. The ZL1 boasts sophisticated tech features such as Magnetic Ride suspension and an electronic limited-slip differential, and it comes with Driver Mode Selector, dual-mode exhaust and advanced connectivity features. All that means driving the car and living it is a pretty joyful experience.

2017 Camaro ZL1 also looks the part – if you’re a muscle car fan, of course – what with the large air intakes, two-tone hood, and 20-inch wheels housing Brembo brakes, not to mention the aero kit with big rear spoiler. There’s also standard Recaro front seats, along with a sueded flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob. Yes, the new ZL1 is all right.
