Although a rough and tumble pickup truck like the F-150 is mostly associated with rednecks and ranchers, the latest iteration of this machine is surprisingly sophisticated. The 2017 Ford F-150 EcoBoost comes with one of the world’s cleverest engines and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Notwithstanding the fact that the number of gears in that ‘box is going to make the typical American pickup trucker feel like Lennie in Of Mice and Men, this transmission helps with the efficiency of the 3.5-liter V6 engine in 2017 Ford F-150 EcoBoost—an engine that now offers 50 lb.-ft. more peak torque for a total of 470 lb.-ft. and max output of 375 hp.
That means this EcoBoost now delivers the power of a big V8 with the economy of a regular V6, at times even better than that. What’s more, the combination of this engine and that transmission (the first volume-production 10-speed in the world) improves the capabilities of the 2017 Ford F-150 EcoBoost, especially in hauling heavy payloads and towing heavy trailers.
“The 2017 Ford F-150 now delivers the best torque in the segment,” says Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, Product Development, and chief technical officer. “This class-leading torque arrives with a transformative 10-speed automatic that improves nearly every aspect of F-150 performance.”
