Building the 10,000th vehicle may not be an impressive feat for a regular, big-business automaker, but for a small manufacturer like McLaren it is a milestone worth celebrating with cake, champagne and coke. This is especially important because they have only been doing this, as a full-on car maker, since 2010.
This achievement is also of great significance since it puts in perspective the company’s incredible rate of growth. As McLaren Automotive Chief Executive Officer, Mike Flewitt, puts it: “The production of the 10,000th McLaren is a significant milestone in the short history of the company. The fact that it took us 42 months to build our 5,000th car and just 22 months to build the next 5,000 speaks volumes about the pace of development of the company. Much of that development is thanks to the introduction of the Sports Series family of cars and it’s therefore fitting that the 10,000th car is a McLaren 570S.”
The milestone car was indeed a 570S in Ceramic Grey paintwork from the McLaren Special Operations ‘Defined’ palette, proving once again that there is a huge market for more affordable sports car bearing the legendary badge of the British brand. The company’s brass obviously know this, which is why they have already cut the Sports Series into three 540C, 570S and 570GT variants, with more body styles and editions planned for the future. We have sneaking suspicion pretty soon they will have to either expand the Woking production plant or build a whole new factory just to keep up with the growth.
