One of the hottest concept cars of this year’s New York Auto Show turned out to be a fairly unremarkable – at least at first sight – SUV. The Subaru Ascent SUV Concept attracted a lot of attention at the motor show, mainly because it previews an upcoming production model.

As with the Subaru Ascent SUV Concept, the production version will be a three-row SUV bearing the same name and pretty much the same sort of design. Subaru is not in the habit of making concepts just for show. So you can expect to see the “Dynamic x Solid” theme on the finished product as well.

Among the highlights of Subaru Ascent SUV is the imposing front grille around which the muscular body is crafted. The whole design exudes offroad confidence, and it is reinforced with Subaru’s traditional assortment of offroad gear, namely the symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. The Ascent production model will be based on a modified version of the Subaru Global Platform that debuted last year. The model will be built at Subaru of Indiana, Inc. in Lafayette, Indiana and will be sold exclusively in the North American market starting in 2018 powered by an all-new turbocharged direct injection boxer engine.
