For 2010 Peugeot upgrades its beautiful 407 Coupe with two new diesel engines and slightly bigger side mirrors! It’s true, I didn’t make that up! Unlike its predecessor, the 406 Coupe which was a creation PininFarina, Peugeot designers did the 407 on their own. It’s not as pretty as the old car but still, it’s one of the most elegant Coupes out there.
Anyway, the engines: There are two new powerplants, both diesel and both with Euro5 standard. First one is a 2.0 liter turbo-diesel with 163 hp and 340 nm of torque which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. You don’t a heavy car with a small diesel engine to be fast, and of course it isn’t! zero to hundred takes 9.1 seconds and top speed is only 220 km/h. But you do expect a small diesel engine to be quit economical, and it is! Peugeot says it only uses 5.4 liters per 100 km and puts out 140g of CO2 per one kilometer. A Peugeot 407 Coupe with this engine starts from 35,000 euros.
The second engine is bigger. It’s a 3.0 liter V6 diesel which develops 240hp and 450nm of torque. The car is much faster with this unit installed. 0-100 in 7.7 seconds and top speed of 243 km/h are not bad records given the car’s fuel consumption which is 7.2 liter per 100 km. The CO2 level for this engine is 189g/km and a 407 Coupe equipped with it would cost 43,100 euros.
New engines, compare to the old versions, offer 18 percent better performance while fuel consumption is lower by almost 15 percent. Part of this advantage is due to the braking energy recovery system which is mind-numbingly boring to explain! but in brief, it absorbs the otherwise wasted energy when you brake or lift your foot off the throttle and put that energy into good use!
