A couple of days ago we heard some rumors about a drop-top version of the yet-to-be-released McLaren MP4-12C supercar and let you know about it, now you can catch a glimpse of how this car would look like through these renderings here! Mind you, making a convertible out of a coupe is not as easy as it seems. A lot of compromises have to be made in order to keep the car in check, some of them would add weight and hurt the performance.
But as you know the British company is putting the production into high gear and is thinking of 3 or 4 new models until 2012, which is by the way just about the time you can expect the convertible MP4 to hit the markets. The coupe version will some out sometime in 2011.
The word is that the convertible version will feature a retractable hard-top in order to maintain the car’s very cool scissor doors, but it will be made completely out of light weight materials such as carbon fiber to be as light and rigid as possible. The MP4 convertible will be powered by the same bi-turbo V8 as in the coupe which develops more than 600 hp and can take the car to top speed of over 200 mph. Although it’s not likely that these figures remain intact with the top down!
