Fisker Automotive claims they are developing a new multi-speed gearbox for electric vehicles which results in Bugatti Veyron-like performance for them.
For now it’s just a theory, but Fisker believes their new gearbox design that allows more than one speed will be able to deliver enormous amounts of torque to the wheels, thus enhancing acceleration and speed. The main problem however is reliability.
Currently all electric vehicles are fitted with one-speed gearbox which is better for efficiency and is of course reliable. Any more than that, and all sort of problems appear, as Tesla proved when they were testing a two-speed ‘box. It proved so problematic they abandoned the project altogether.
If Fisker’s solution works, it’ll open a new chapter in electric vehicles book and change things for the better.
